In addition to our November 24 event, VISUALS is also holding a one-day Holiday Showcase at the Portico Gallery on December 9, during the downtown market and Santa Parade. Again, this is a chance to both show your work, and hopefully sell for folks who are in the holiday spirit.

If you’re hoping for sales, try to have some smaller items available. For example, at our holiday event last year, cards and ornaments sold very well. At the same time, do bring some of your other work for display and/or potential sale, so that people can see the full range of your talents.

We ask that you try to not bring exactly the same items to both events. There can be some overlap, though.

Important details:

Setup starts at 10am

There’s a 20% commission to the Gallery, with access to credit card processing, etc.

Please volunteer to spend 1 hour on the premises, people love to meet the artists and learn about their work!

Demos are welcome and encouraged

There’s no wall space available, as the existing show will remain in place. If you plan to attend, please contact Linda Bachman at lbachmanartsgmailcom (lbachmanartsgmailcom) .
There will be extra display space for smaller items that can sit on a shelf.

This event will end with a potluck VISUALS holiday party at the gallery:

The party starts at 7:30pm

The gallery will remain open to shoppers until 9pm when the downtown market closes (so no alcohol, sorry!)

On November 24, from 5 – 8pm, the Squamish Chamber of Commerce will hold a reception for their annual Christmas tree display at the Adventure Centre. As part of the event, VISUALS members are invited to bring their work to showcase and sell.

This is a single evening event, temporarily expanding our existing displays just for this night. The new Mayor and Council are invited, as well as a large segment of the Squamish business community, so this is a great opportunity to showcase our work.

We’ll be spread around the ring of the building (as far as we know). As such, we request that you stay for the full event or assign a proxy to share a table with, to make sure that your work is both safe and easy to purchase (if you choose to sell your work).

Since this is a festive event, and should get people in the mood for decorating, etc. If you’re hoping for sales, try to have some smaller items available. For example, at our holiday event last year, cards and ornaments sold very well. At the same time, do bring some of your other work for display and/or potential sale, so that people can see the full range of your talents.

Important details:

Setup starts at 4pm

Takedown is 8-9pm, building closes at 9

Please provide a small value donated piece/item for draw prizes

Please send us digital images of your work if you haven’t already (as many as you’d like). We’re hoping to have a slideshow of member work in the theatre during the event

Draw ticket earnings will be donated to a local holiday fund. We encourage people to do some kind of demonstration if possible, as well, but it’s not mandatory. It could involve some small aspect of what you do that’s nicely portable.

Also:

We’re giving a 10% commission on all sales to the Adventure Centre, which they will use either to fund the venue, or to donate to a local holiday fund.

We may have the ability to process credit cards for the event. If so, credit card sales will involve an additional 5% commission to cover the processing costs.

If you plan to attend, please contact Linda Bachman at lbachmanartsgmailcom (lbachmanartsgmailcom) . She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with a major in Painting from the University of Victoria in 1999 and has been actively creating and contributing to the artistic community she surrounds herself in. The body of work Terlesky has amassed throughout the last decade is evidence of her dedication, not only to art, but also to life and living every day as an artist.

Circuits of the Sea

Terlesky creates canvases that are largely abstract in style built around an awareness of the human form and kinetic movement. Themes that have developed a language in her work are electricity & power, sustainable energy practices, spirituality, and the human body as it relates to the environment. Her paintings challenge our awareness of pace by illustrating optical, illusionary space or by flattening space with solid colour placement. She has exhibited her work in Whistler, Squamish, Victoria, Vancouver, Montreal and California.

For Toby Jaxon, art is instinctive and natural but not always effortless!

Toby’s public artistic career began early, at age six, winning a poster design contest. From pencil crayons and poster paints, she moved to oils and acrylics while attending high school inPrince Georgewhere she affected a hyperrealist technique that eventually taxed her patience — Toby was longing to develop a more expressive style. Later, while attending Art + Design college inAlberta, she experimented with other media and styles finally settling on acrylics and eventually gravitating toward impressionistic landscapes. Since moving back to the West Coast in 1990, after spending five years inToronto, Toby’s art has appeared in galleries and public venues, solo exhibits, frequent café shows as well as private and corporate collections.

Along with a strong passion for colour, Toby’s artistic inspiration springs from omnipresent nature and movement, elements that often enlighten her contemporary florals or portrait commissions.

Surrounded by the tranquil coastal mountains, she resides in Garibaldi Estates along the ‘Sea to Sky’ corridor – mountain biking, kayaking, skiing and pursuing her innate love of painting.

Born and raised in Japan moved to Squamish in 2005.

Ever since I was a little child, I always love to draw or paint something I find beautiful or interesting. I also like to view all kinds of art very much.

I first started oil paintings when I was 12, I joined the Fine Art Club at school. With the support of the Art club, the continual painting of pictures became one of my purposes for life. Although I never studied painting under the guidance of professionals, I have always retained a strong passion for artistic painting.

Flower in the Night

After 12 years of non painting, I was finally able to start painting again in Squamish. The beautiful natural surroundings inspired me to paint landscapes, which I had never painted before.

Estuary in Summer

Since the age of 18, my friends and I have had an art show at an art gallery, in Osaka Japan, once a year for the next 25 years. Then after 18 year interruption, we restarted our art show in Osaka in the fall of 2009. And I’m preparing for the next show in Japan starting on November 6th,2011.

I moved to British Columbia in 1994 from Toronto, Ontario. I dabbled in clay on and off in the 90’s when I lived in North Vancouver. I have always wanted to learn pottery. Living in apartments forced me to utilize local community studios but I did not have my own space to create.

When I moved to Squamish in 2003 there wasn’t a community studio in town so clay took a back-burner in my life. In 2005 a short-lived community studio opened up and I took additional courses and finally set up a make-shift studio in my garage fully equipped with a wheel, kiln and homemade glazes.

In 2007 I taught myself how to crochet and have been a complete addict ever since. During the cold winter months when the garage was too cold and damp to go out and “play clay” I could now keep my hands busy and continue to create. I crochet almost every day whether for 5 minutes or 2 hours and enjoy making coming up with my own unique designs.

Having my own space to create as well as living in such a beautiful place like Squamish, BC, the creative juices started flowing. Squamish is such an inspiring place to live and the surrounding nature influences every single piece I make both pottery or crochet. The colours of glaze of the yarns I use resemble the nature that surrounds me. I keep coming back to blues, greens and browns inspired by the trees, ferns, mountains, rivers and the ocean that surround the area that I work and play.

Pottery and crochet are my passion and my hobby. Unfortunately I do not do pottery full time as a large chunk of my time is running my own corporate recruitment business. So when I am not doing pottery or crocheting, you can find me here which is my “other” life.

As of December 2010 my new pottery studio is complete and open for business! Lots of great lighting (and heat) and a wonderful place to inspire even more creative juices to flow! I mainly focus on hand-building as I love how unique and individual each piece looks. I do some wheel work but my passion is hand-building.

I love pottery and crochet equally and feel fortunate that I am able to do both whenever I have the opportunity.

Join David McEown and VISUALS Squamish Valley Artists for “Antarctica to the North Pole:”

16 Feb 2011 from 7-9 pm

Quest University, in the Media Room (first floor of the Academic Building, there will be signage)

Only $5 admission!

An artist’s journey circumnavigating the arctic ocean and antarctica by ski, sailboat and icebreaker. David narrates a entertaining digital show that merges paintings, video and photography from the ends of the earth. Stories of chance encounters with polar bears and emperor penguins are weaved together with reflections on the inner journey and the creative process of painting.

From Antarctica to the North Pole and with great emphasis on the Canadian wilderness, artist David McEown celebrates some of the most beautiful, yet fragile, natural heritage of our planet though the creative act of painting.

After graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 1992, David spent his last 2 years off campus pursuing independent studies at the Algoma School of Landscape Arts based in the remote wilderness of Northern Ontario. After completing these studies he stayed several more years teaching and wilderness guiding. For his body of work done in this Lake Superior region steeped in indigenous culture and Canadian landscape painting history, David was awarded the Elizabeth Greenshield Foundation Grants in 1994 and in 1999.

Also in 1999, he was elected a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour for which he served as a director from 2002 to 2007.

David’s work has received nationally and international awards, in various juried shows. His most prestigious award came in 2005 with the A.J. Casson Medal from the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour. Since then he has earned a reputation as one of Canada’s most accomplished and travelled landscape watercolourists represented with paintings in many public and corporate collections worldwide as well as articles published in numerous magazines.

From 2005 David has focused his art on the polar regions, a journey that led him to circumnavigate both the Arctic and Antarctica. On board research vessels and polar class icebreakers, hiking and even skiing to the North Pole, he continues to work on a project witnessing and recording the beauty of a world that is rapidly changing and disappearing. Through the spontaneity of watercolour and letting the forces of nature participate in the painting process, his paintings emphasize the sense of impermanence and change.

David loves to paint on location, a way to meditate and connect with the landscape, but he also loves to share his art in the studio by teaching. Since 2002 he has been leading workshops at the Royal Ontario Museum, and is sought after by prestigious art clubs in Canada. Internationally, as part of various artist-in-residence programs, he has been sharing his enthusiasm and unique way of seeing with participants from all over the world.

A talented speaker and performer, David is also very keen to share his passionate multi-media presentations and watercolour demos, hoping to communicate and bring an awareness of the wonders of our planet.
